The Origin of Dragon Boat Festival in English

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most significant traditional holidays in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, which usually corresponds to June or July in the Gregorian calendar. This festival has a long history and is celebrated not only in China but also in other countries with Chinese communities.

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to over 2,000 years ago. One of the most popular legends associated with this festival is the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from the state of Chu during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was renowned for his loyalty and dedication to his country, but he was exiled by the king due to political intrigue. Heartbroken by the corruption and decline of his homeland, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

According to legend, local villagers, who admired Qu Yuan's integrity, raced out in their boats to try and save him. They beat drums and splashed the water with paddles to scare away fish and evil spirits, hoping to protect Qu Yuan's body. To further honor his memory, they threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan’s body.

Over time, these acts of respect evolved into the dragon boat races and zongzi-eating traditions that are still observed today. Dragon boat racing has become an iconic symbol of the festival, with teams competing in colorful boats shaped like dragons. The races are not only a thrilling spectacle but also a way to commemorate Qu Yuan's sacrifice and promote unity and cooperation.

In addition to dragon boat racing and eating zongzi, people also hang calamus and mugwort leaves at their doorways to ward off evil spirits. Children wear colorful amulets, and some regions hold poetry readings to celebrate the literary heritage of Qu Yuan.

The Dragon Boat Festival serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty, patriotism, and community spirit. It is a time for families to gather, share stories, and enjoy traditional foods while honoring the rich cultural legacy of ancient China.
